Benefit Demolition Derby Huge Success
With the help of many volunteers and sponsors, a great crowd, and good weather, a donation in excess of $13,000.00 was given to the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance on behalf of Malayna Kopf on October 18 th, her 2 nd birthday.
“Crashin’ for the Cause,” a charity demolition derby held on September 25 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in West Bend, was organized to benefit the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance is an organization that funds research and raises awareness for this disease. The event was organized by Joe and Abby Kopf of Eldorado, their family and friends, and co-sponsored by the Eldorado Lions Club. Due to the success of the event, the family intends to hold the 2 nd annual demolition derby in Spring of 2005.
Tuberous Sclerosis(TS) is a disorder that causes benign tumors to form in many different organs , primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, skin, and lungs (from the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Web site at www.tsalliance.org). Two year old Malayna Kopf was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis at four weeks due to the tumors that had formed in her heart. She began to have seizures at four months, this is very common in people with TS. After many failed attempts to control her seizures through medication, she underwent two brain surgeries this past April to remove some of the tubers that were causing her seizures.
The demolition derby was won by Jeff Schmidt of Minnesota, formerly of Fond du Lac, but the real winner was the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to all those who showed their support for this wonderful event. Without the help of the many volunteers and the following donors the event would not have been possible.
